Pike Place Market

Part of what makes it such a great attraction is the vast and rich history of Seattle and the role Pike Place Market plays in showcasing that history today!

As one of the leaders in gold rushing, logging, fishing, shipping, and the increase of merchants doing business in Seattle, the turn of the century brought a lot of change and continuous growth for Seattle. The rush and influx of these trades ended up doubling the population in just one decade, leading to a new demand for agricultural goods and services.

Seven years later, on August 17, 1907, the idea of Pike Place Market came to life and farmers and consumers alike energized the town and continued to grow, becoming the heart of Seattle that it is today! The dedication by Thomas Revelle, Seattle City Councilman in 1907 and the innovator of the Market, still holds true today:

“The Market is yours. I dedicate it to you and may it prove of benefit to you and your children. It is for you to protect, defend, and uphold and it is for you to see that those who occupy it treat you fairly. … This is one of the greatest days in the history of Seattle.”

Today, the Market spans over nine acres across this historic district with more than 200 unique owner-operated shops, including over 80 restaurants, owner-operated bakeries, fish markets, butcher shops, produce stands, specialty food stores, and an exuberant crafts market, there is no doubt you will find something for the whole family!!
